Catherine & Stéphane REY
Saona 47 Owners
Meet Catherine and Stéphane, happy sexagenarians and owners of a Fountaine Pajot Saona 47, between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean…
For several years now, we’ve been closely following the adventures of French couple Catherine and Stéphane REY, passionate owners of their 2020 Saona 47 Fountaine Pajot. We had the pleasure of meeting them in 2022 during the Fountaine Pajot Owners’ Rendez-Vous in Croatia, and again in 2023 at the Multihull Show in La Grande-Motte (France), where they shared their Atlantic crossing aboard a Fountaine Pajot Hélia 44, a catamaran belonging to Australian friends. Today, they’re sailing once again on their boat after a wintering in Greece, living an extraordinary adventure between the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean archipelago.

In just 14 months, Catherine and Stéphane have sailed through over 20 countries, accumulating unforgettable memories and a wealth of experience in long-distance cruising. Their new adventure began in the Mediterranean, after picking up their Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 in Greece and setting sail for Turkey. From there, they explored the Aegean Sea, crossed the legendary Corinth Canal, and sailed along the Italian coasts before reaching Sicily and Malta. After a stop in Tunisia and a visit to the Balearic Islands, they crossed the Strait of Gibraltar, marking the beginning of their Atlantic crossing.
Their first major stop in the Atlantic was Agadir, an unexpected stop to visit family. They then headed to the Canary Islands, the starting point for the Rallye des Îles du Soleil. This organized crossing took them to Cape Verde, and then to the Caribbean, offering them a safe and friendly sailing experience. At each stop, they discovered breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable anchorages, while sharing their daily life with other sailors.
In the Caribbean, their route took them from Marie-Galante in Guadeloupe to Dominica, passing through Antigua & Barbuda and Saint Martin. Every stop was an opportunity to discover fascinating cultures, explore paradisiacal islands, and admire exceptional wildlife. One of the most memorable stages of their journey was their passage through the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, where they sailed in crystal-clear waters and discovered spectacular coral reefs.
They then set course for Puerto Rico before heading to the Dominican Republic. There, they had the privilege of witnessing the majestic humpback whale ballet in the Bay of Samaná. Their journey then took them to the Turks & Caicos, where they discovered the stunning beauty of shallow lagoons and pristine beaches.
Their exploration continued in the Bahamas, where each island revealed dazzling shades of blue. They experienced magical moments, swimming with nurse sharks and enjoying anchorages of rare beauty. After this idyllic interlude, they continued their journey to Cuba, immersing themselves in the unique atmosphere of Santiago de Cuba, Cienfuegos, and Havana. The contrast with the previous islands was striking, with Cuba marked by limited infrastructure but invaluable cultural wealth. Finally, their adventure led them to Guatemala, where they sheltered their catamaran from the cyclone season on the Rio Dulce.
Since then, Catherine and Stéphane have returned to the sea to begin a new stage of their journey, currently situated north of the Bahamas, the final stop before heading to the United States, where they plan to sail along the East Coast.
Living on the sea for 14 months requires a boat that is both comfortable and functional. For Catherine and Stéphane, their Saona 47 has become more than just a mode of transport: it’s a true floating home. Thanks to the space and stability of their catamaran, they fully enjoy each stop, savoring the privilege of being able to sail freely across the world in comfort. Whether with other sailors or locals, they can share experiences and forge strong bonds at each new destination.
For Catherine and Stéphane, one thing is certain: you have to dare to take the plunge! They encourage all sailing enthusiasts to overcome their apprehensions and set off to discover the world on a catamaran. Their story is a source of inspiration for all those who dream of a nomadic lifestyle on the water. A word of advice? Follow sailing groups on social networks.
