Martin, 22 years old and 3rd year student at the École de la marine marchande (French merchant navy training school), future offi cer 1st class, had the pleasure of sailing on the brand new saba 50 this summer, in the mediterranean, with a super crew: 6 friends all members of the French sailing team. Here are his impressions !

We picked up the boat in benalmadena in the south of spain, where a fi rst crew had taken her from La Rochelle and it was our job to deliver her to Hyères for her Mediterranean tour of the cannes, Genoa and barcelona boat shows. At the same time, a second saba 50 crossed the Atlantic heading for the Annapolis boat show. When we approached the balearic Islands, we had the best weather conditions for fully exploring the boat’s potential: 7 to 8 knots on the sea, for a windspeed of 12 knots – a good cruising speed. Later we were able to push the saba 50 to her limits in a fairly violent thunderstorm, with up to 40 knot gusts and 3 meters of trough. We were won over when we recorded a 14-knot surf under mainsail with two reefs and a shortened genoa. The boat remains reliable and easy to steer and handle in every situation.

For the inevitable windless periods during this season, we particularly appreciated the two volvo 75HP engines with which we made headway at 7.5 knots at 1800 rpm.

We found moving around on board easy and her seakeeping was good. At night, we held watches between the helm station and the chart table and by day, the lounge deck and cockpit were rarely empty.

We also found the boat to be self-suffi cient in terms of energy under sail or at anchor: the three solar panels were always enough for our power consumption, autopilot included. We found the Ecocruising concept with renewable energy sources and energy savings on all the equipment of particular interest.

Manon, who crewed with us, particularly enjoyed this trip:

I had already been on cruises on catamarans, but I had never delivered one. We spent all our time outside. The only time we went inside was to cook or sleep. The lounge deck was probably our favorite place! For us this couldn’t have been a better delevery.
